Implant aftercare in Essen
Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory condition of the tissue surrounding an implant that is associated with progressive loss of the supporting bone. Soft-tissue inflammation occurring without such bone loss is distinguished from this condition and is known as peri-implant mucositis. Any changes should be examined by a dentist so that their extent and the necessary next steps can be determined.

Possible signs affecting the implant
Redness at the gum margin, discomfort in the area of the implant, and pain or sensitivity to touch can be signs of inflammation. Such changes can have various causes and cannot be reliably assessed based on individual symptoms alone.
A prompt examination is advisable if new or worsening symptoms occur.
Aftercare and personal factors
Plaque deposits in hard-to-reach areas below the gum margin can promote inflammation. The assessment also takes into account factors such as smoking, diabetes, osteoporosis, existing periodontitis, certain medications, and the healing process to date.
Regular check-ups and an oral hygiene routine tailored to the implant restoration are therefore important components of aftercare. For further information, please see Prevention and Prophylaxis.
aMMP-8 tests complement the examination
At diadentis, we use aMMP-8 tests as a supplementary diagnostic tool. aMMP-8 is a biomarker that can indicate collagen breakdown in the tissue. We evaluate the measured value in conjunction with the condition of the gums and implant, the patient’s history, and the findings from the rest of the examination.
A test result alone neither confirms nor rules out peri-implantitis. It does not replace the clinical examination or any necessary X-ray diagnostics. We will discuss the appropriate next steps based on your overall clinical findings.
diadentis is an ImplantSafe Center
Our practice is certified as an ImplantSafe Center® by the German Oral Health Foundation (DMS). This certification is part of a collaboration between dentognostics and the DMS. It complements our focus on prevention and meticulous implant aftercare; however, it does not guarantee the long-term preservation of any individual implant.
The DMS lists Dr. Stefan Schmid and diadentis in its practice directory. Further information about the program is available from dentognostics. External pages will only open when clicked.
Examination prior to treatment decisions
During the appointment, we assess the implant, the surrounding gums, and the individual clinical history. The appropriate further diagnostic measures and treatment steps depend on the extent of the clinical findings and the overall situation.
Therapy can help preserve an implant but does not guarantee success. Options, limitations, and aftercare are discussed before treatment begins.
Frequently asked questions about peri-implantitis
Does redness around the implant indicate peri-implantitis?
Not necessarily. Soft tissue inflammation without confirmed bone loss may be classified as peri-implant mucositis. Distinguishing this from peri-implantitis requires an examination of the implant and the surrounding tissue.
Why are follow-up appointments important after implant placement?
Follow-up appointments allow for the detection of changes and plaque deposits in hard-to-reach areas. Recommended intervals depend on the individual situation.
Does an aMMP-8 test replace the implant examination?
No. The test is a supplementary tool. Clinical findings, the progression of the condition, and—if necessary—X-rays are important for assessment. Only by considering all these factors together can it be determined what further investigation or treatment is appropriate.
This information does not replace a personal examination or individual medical advice.
