Endodontics in Essen
Root canal treatment may be considered if the tissue inside the tooth—the pulp—is inflamed or damaged due to deep decay, trauma, or other factors. The goal of the planning process is to assess the situation and determine the feasibility of saving the tooth.
Possible causes and symptoms
Deep cavities, dental injuries, and pulp disorders can be the underlying causes. Symptoms may include throbbing toothache and discomfort triggered by pressure or temperature changes.
Such symptoms must be examined before a course of treatment is determined.
What happens during root canal treatment
Inflamed or necrotic pulp tissue is removed from the root canal system using specialized instruments. The canals are prepared, cleaned, and disinfected before being filled and sealed.
Depending on the clinical findings, tools such as an operating microscope and flexible nickel-titanium instruments, as well as various filling techniques, may be used. The specific procedure will be explained to you before treatment begins.
Anesthesia, appointments, and costs for root canal treatment
Local anesthesia can reduce or eliminate pain during the procedure. The measures required depend on your specific clinical situation. Please discuss any existing symptoms or concerns with us beforehand so we can coordinate the treatment plan with you.
Whether a single appointment suffices or multiple sessions are required depends on factors such as the initial condition of the tooth and the anatomy of the root canal system. Consequently, cleaning, disinfection, and filling may be performed at separate times. The treatment plan also includes the subsequent sealing of the tooth and scheduled follow-up appointments. Please contact the practice promptly if you experience increasing pain or swelling after treatment.
Statutory health insurance covers root canal treatment only under specific conditions. Additional procedures or treatments falling outside these criteria may need to be paid for privately. You will be informed in advance about whether any out-of-pocket costs apply and what they are, based on the clinical findings and planned services. The subsequent filling or crown must be considered separately.

Restoring the tooth after treatment
Depending on the initial situation, the treated tooth can subsequently be restored with a filling, an inlay, or a crown. The type of restoration planned will be discussed based on the clinical findings.
Frequently asked questions about root canal treatment.
Can a root canal treatment always save the tooth?
Success or long-term tooth preservation cannot be guaranteed across the board. The prospects are assessed individually following the examination and diagnosis.
How is the tooth restored afterwards?
A filling, an inlay, or a crown are options for the subsequent restoration. The choice depends on your personal situation.
Please contact the practice directly if you experience acute or worsening symptoms. This page is not a substitute for a medical examination.
