Pediatric dentistry in Essen

Dental health from the very beginning

We care for children starting from the appearance of their first tooth. Children should be able to get to know the dental practice at their own pace. Calm, clear guidance lays the foundation for experiencing check-ups and preventive care in an age-appropriate way.

Getting to know the practice step by step

An early introductory visit allows children to experience the rooms, instruments, and procedures at their own pace. Some children find it helpful to have a familiar companion with them or to watch a family member undergoing an examination. Such observation is only an option if the person being treated explicitly consents; in the case of children, the necessary consent from legal guardians must also be obtained.

If a child is anxious or not yet ready for an examination, several short visits may be more appropriate than a forced procedure. The necessary treatment and its urgency are taken into account in this process.

Preventive care and home dental hygiene

Individual preventive care may include age-appropriate toothbrushing instruction, the visualization of plaque, cleaning, and fluoride application. For permanent teeth, the suitability of fissure sealing is assessed based on caries risk and the shape of the chewing surfaces.

Further information can be found under Prevention and Prophylaxis and Caries Diagnosis and Therapy.

An examination tailored to the child

Age, development, past experiences, and current clinical findings determine how the appointment is structured. While it is not possible to promise a completely anxiety-free or pain-free treatment, the goal is to provide care that is respectful and easy for the child to understand.

Frequently asked questions about pediatric dentistry

What happens if my child does not cooperate during the first appointment?

The pace is adapted to the situation. Depending on the clinical findings, the initial focus may be on getting to know one another; in cases of urgent complaints, the next steps are discussed jointly.

Is fissure sealing advisable for every child?

No. The decision is based on the tooth surface, the eruption of permanent teeth, and the individual risk of tooth decay.
